A Case Study from our Office
|
|
Here are some before and after lateral x-rays of the
cervical spine on two female patients.
The first set of films (from the left) shows the
difference made in a few months of chiropractic care [patient T.S.] and
the second set shows the results of a couple years of care in an older
patient [patient J.R.].
Remember, structure
determines function, and function is the key to good health
and an enjoyable life! Chiropractors are doctors of structure and
function - we correct abnormal structure (alignment) to improve
function.

Cesarean
Section Linked To Asthma And Allergies
Research reported in the October
2000 issue of the Journal of Asthma finds that children born through
special medical procedures as a result of obstetric complications have a
higher incidence of asthma and allergic disorders later in life.
The
study, performed at the Imperial College School of Medicine in London,
England, followed 8088 Finnish children from birth to the age of 7. The
researchers found that babies whose birth involved the use of cesarean
section or forceps were at a greater risk for developing asthma and
allergies.
A
previous study hints that the mechanism most likely involved is damage
to the babies' brain stem or spinal cord from the trauma of the
interventions, which is known as Traumatic Birth Syndrome (TBS).
According to a literature review in the October 1993 issue of the
Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics cases of TBS are
going unreported and as a result, under treated. The report goes on to
say that manual treatment (such as Chiropractic care) would be
beneficial to patients suffering from TBS related injuries.
By
way of commentary, all babies need to have their spines checked as soon
after birth as possible to prevent future health problems from
surfacing. Even a "normal" birth can cause tremendous stresses
on the fragile spines of infants. Chiropractors are uniquely qualified
to detect and correct the spinal damage that occurs in TBS.

What were the original motivations behind routine infant
circumcision in the West?
There are no reasons
what-so-ever for circumcision. This is a surgical procedure
looking for a reason to be performed and it should be thought of as
genital mutilation (since that's what it is). Unfortunately, in
our society people have been taught everything but the truth with
regards to circumcision. This article details the sorted history
of circumcision; be prepared to be surprised.

Cancer Risk Falls if
Women Extend Breastfeeding
Women who continue to breast feed long after their
children have started on solid foods may be protecting themselves
against breast cancer, a study suggests.
The more that we investigate breast feeding, the
more we realize how essential it is for all aspects of a child's life
for that child's entire life. Now we're starting to see that Mom
benefits too. I'm sure we'll continue to find more and more
reasons why all children should be breast fed. If you know someone
who is breast feeding, show them support and encourage them to do it for
as long as possible. If you know of someone not breast feeding
their infant, encourage them to start (if it's not too late
already). We as a society need to give our children the very best
chance of surviving on all levels (physical, mental and emotional) -
this survival starts early by breast feeding for at least 1-2 years.

development according to new research.

Pregnancy and Fish Consumption
No. One does not result in the other, but one may affect the
other. Recent reports indicate that mercury levels in shark, swordfish,
king mackerel and tilefish may be high enough to damage a fetus. Women
who are pregnant and women who may become pregnant have been advised to
restrict or even eliminate these species of fish from their diets.
Women-Fish-Strokes
This one comes to us from the Nation's Newspaper the venerable fountain
of useful information: The USA Today, January 17, 2001 citing a study
found in the January 17 issue of JAMA.
The study in question found
that women who include two to four servings of fish such as salmon,
mackerel and sardines per week in their diets can reduce their risk of
ischemic stroke by 48%. The study indicates that the levels of omega 3
fatty acids in these species are particularly helpful to women.
The study involved the
evaluation of data from 80,000 nurses over a fourteen-year period making
it the largest study of its kind.
If you noticed mackerel was
on the be cautious if your pregnant list and enjoy more if you are on
the stroke prone list. Make of that what you will!
Cod Liver Oil and Diabetes in Offspring
While we are discussing fish stories we might as well keep going! That
reliable source of health care information Parade magazine on January
28, 2001 reported on a Norwegian study that appeared in a recent issue
of Diabetologia.
Seems that women who took
cod liver oil during their pregnancy reduced by 66% the risk of their
children developing juvenile (Type 1) diabetes.
Cod liver oil is commonly
recommended for infants and moms in Norway due to the lack of sunlight
in their northern climate. Cod liver oil is rich in vitamin D as well as
in omega 3 fatty acids. It was not known which aspect of the cod liver
oil was responsible for the decrease in diabetes. It was theorized to be
due in part to both factors.
A
woman has no greater love than to ingest this foul stuff for the well
being of her children!!
Do Hugs Help Pain?
Another
duh. Fitness magazine reported on a study from Boston University
involving 30 infants who got heel sticks to withdraw blood. Those that
were held by their mothers in a full body skin-to-skin hug cried and
grimaced less and had less change in their heart rates during the stick
versus those that were not hugged. It was also determined that steady
light pressure was more effective than rubbing the babies backs.
I
for one can safely say that I cry less with regular hugs:-)

Epidemiology, Vaccines Should Be Voluntary
This editorial is reprinted from the International
Herald Tribune. It is by Eric Hurwitz, assistant professor at the School
of Public Health, Department of Epidemiology, at the University of
California, Los Angeles certainly a "main stream" school and
probably not what the medical politicians want you to hear and read.

Prescription Pain-Killers
Linked to Miscarriage
A report featured on MSNBC.com and ABC News.com suggests
that common non steroidal anti-inflammatory painkillers may be linked to
an increased risk of miscarriage. According to the articles, researchers
found that women taking non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
suffered more miscarriages than women who had not taken these drugs.
NSAIDs are a class of drugs that include both aspirin
and ibuprofen. While they are commonly used to treat pain they also have
some potentially deadly side effects. According to the articles, an
estimated 16,000 Americans die each year as a result of the side effects
of taking these drugs.

Why Are Girls Growing Up So Fast?
Almost exactly 30 years ago, around 5,000 people in
up-state Michigan were exposed to a chemical estrogen that had been
accidentally added to a feed given to cattle. A decade or so later, the
girls whose mothers had been exposed to the hormone, were found to be
going into puberty 12 months ahead of their classmates who had not
consumed contaminated meat or milk.

Bad
Handwriting By Doctors May Contribute To 7,000 Deaths a Year
Prescription errors are responsible for the deaths of an
estimated 7,000 Americans annually, and many of those errors are a result
of bad handwriting. Some hospitals are taking the issue so seriously that
they're sending doctors back to school to learn how to write legibly.
